More than two years ago Adivah has announced the Babes of New Eden project that lets you vote for your favorite avatar side-by-side. It has quickly gained popularity in the EVE Online community. Shortly thereafter at least two other similar websites showed up. None of them seem to be active anymore.
Well, things are about to change now! Over this past weekend I have worked hard to create a website that loosely mimics functionality of the original Babes of New Eden project.
New Eden Faces - www.newedenfaces.com
The project is still in its early stage, which means I need your help. If you find any problems with usability of the site, please leave a feedback so that it could be fixed and improved over time. Moreover, if you have any suggestions for new features or rating algorithms, don't be shy. All feedback is welcome.
There are over 800 characters currently pre-loaded in the database as of this moment, so go ahead - add your character and start voting! |

Thanks everyone. The latest update as of this morning fixes some issues with the footer when website is viewed in Firefox and Internet Explorer.
And here are some interesting statistics:
- There are now over a 1000 characters on the website!
- 19,458 votes have been cast in total already. |

Apologies, this is what happens when you try to update the site on a slow WiFi. The update that I canceled which was missing a configuration file (usernames and password for database) apparently went through anyway.
The site is up and running now and EVE Profile links should be fixed. |

Are you accepting advertising deals for the site?
I am very much against advertisements. They greatly bring down the user experience quality, in return for a very little passive income. There won't be those kind of annoying ads on this site, ever.
Most cloud computing hosting providers these days have a free tier, and a domain name can be bought for $10 a year, or 2 lattes at Starbucks.
But If it's a small unobtrusive ad from another EVE Online community fansite who will in exchange promote New Eden Faces on their website, I would consider it.

I need some feedback on this before i make the change. Right now leaderboard is sorted by the Elo rating, and as you may have noticed it's pretty volatile. One moment you are there, the next moment you are not in even Top 100 anymore. Death Cell who's been #1 a few hours ago is now #50.
Death Cell has a winning percentage of 0.73, while the current character in the #3 position has a winning percentage of 0.72. Someone with a higher winning percentage is #50 and the one with a lower winning percentage is #3.
I think it would be slightly more accurate to sort leaderboards by the winning percentage. But if everyone enjoys currently fast-paced leaderboard then I will leave it as is.
@NightCrawler 85: I will add the report button in the next update. As for the skip button, I thought about it, in the end I think it will encourage people not to vote on a lot of portraits. You could just skip hundreds of them and vote only on the ones you like, thus creating a gap between highly attractive characters with high wins/losses count vs unattractive characters with low win/losses count. |

Eurydia what makes you think that? If it's the high losses numbers, it could be, not entirely sure, be related to not having a skip button. As I've mentioned above having a skip button presents its own problems and potential abusing, but not having it people will just click random image if they don't like either avatars in order to see next results. Some new changes as of today:
- Character data will be loaded once per Home and Top 100 pages. Moving back and forth between pages will now be instantaneous.
- Report button (intended for characters with no avatar, so please try not to abuse this button)
- New characters will have their images saved locally. Depending on where you live, but from here, I've noticed a dramatic increase in loading time: 70ms vs 575ms on average for 256x256 avatar. I will find a way to move existing 1200 characters to use locally saved images but for now they still use CCP's images server. This change affects only newly added characters.
- Skip button (bound to s key)
- Slide-in animation for avatars
- Link character names to their detailed profile page
- Added lots of error handlers, so server shouldn't crash as often anymore. There was one pesky error where wins count was set to NULL and it would cause a crash server. I am still not sure why that happens, but at least it won't crash the server again for that reason.
@BoSau Hotim: All avatars up until today were retrieved from the CCP server. It was always up to date. After today images will be stored locally. In the next few days I'll make sure that images are updated every 24 or 48 hours to synchronize with your current avatar which may or may not have changed since then.
@Tanthalassa: I too have noticed that some avatars are showed up more than others, but I promise it's all random. I don't really have an easy solution to fix this problem. But this could be fixed at the expensive of slower response time. Right now when Person 1 opens the website, his/her browser has data on all 1200+ characters. If Person 2 opens newedenfaces.com he/she also has data on all 1200+ characters which does not depend on the choices of Person 1. If I were to make it so that everyone gets displayed equal number of times, server has to be in charge of deciding who gets to see what. So instead of loading all characters at once it has to send 2 characters at a time, which involves one or two database calls each time someone votes, and then when they vote another 2 calls to database. So yes it could be done. If it's possible to achieve similar performance as it is right now I will do it.
@Tanthalassa(2): I have thought about pairing high-rating with high-rating and low-rating with low rating. It's easily doable too. My only concern was it would be come a bit difficult to select who to vote for: What if you are faced with two good looking avatars, who do you choose : http://www.newedenfaces.com/characters/916857044 vs http://www.newedenfaces.com/characters/1100933456
@Indahmawar Fazmarai: Very good points. I do like the idea of tracking median votes in order to help new characters. But for historical ranking I think it would only make sense if it had different character sets every time. Else it will be just a matter of luck who gets in the top ranking for that given week/month. Or someone would just be consistently in the Top ranking. I'll see what I can do about the median rating matching.
if anyone else has some feedback on the ranking and voting system please do let me know. If it's significantly different (for the better) perhaps it would be a good idea to reset ratings for all characters to get everyone a fresh start.

Taking down the site momentarily to push the new update:
- Bug fixes.
- Update Avatar button: it will fetch the latest image from CCP servers and store it locally in the database. For existing characters, it converts existing URLs to point to the database instead.
- Removed ELO rating completely: leaderboard is now sorted by the win/loss ratio which I find to be more accurate representation. This is a step in the right direction. The next step would be to normalize votes by the median of wins + losses. Currently the leaderboard favors new players, because they will usually have a high winning percentage, especially if it's a good looking avatar.
- Added notifications: just for the Update Avatar button for now.

I wasn't able to reproduce the bug. But yeah that shouldn't happen. There were some recent changes to how wins and losses are updated, so that hopefully fixed it.
But I did find another bug that would cause players with 0 wins or 0 losses to be ignored completely when being voted. So that should be fixed.
By the way, sorry guys for taking it down so often, this update process takes 3-4 minutes, and if there is a significant bug in the system I think it should be fixed as soon as possible. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

I will be resetting the stats as as result of this change. That's only fair to everyone. Or maybe somebody simply downrates potential winners. Your own avatar is @ Wins: 72 Losses: 87 at the time of the posting.
I believe the reset didn't affect everyone. I see many characters still with high loss / high ratio. I did have wins in the range of 70 before. Most of the top characters right now only have 3-5 wins, so those with a few hundred definitely don't make any sense. I am pretty sure that bug has been eliminated.
@JAG Fox: That bug you reported about where wins count was decremented was due to the design. When multiple people load the website, they have their own copy of character data. So when someone wins it's not just incrementing count but it's incrementing according to your data. Then if someone stumbles upon your avatar after your win count increased, it will overwrite the wins count, thus either bringing it down or leaving it the same instead of increasing. This problem should be fixed now. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Update: There seems to be something really strange going on. The reset did work, but crazy wins and losses numbers still kept showing up, by the thousands, and sometimes even decreasing. Not sure what's going on there. Wins and Loss count should equal to each other in any case.
I just pushed another update, and things seem to be working fine now. After 5 votes, the database has in total 5 wins and 5 losses. If something weird happens again then it's an external fault, or one sneaky bastard bug. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

i like that idea! if i skip it's because i don't want to choose from 2 equally stupid pics.. also having a problem where one or both images are not loading. this is happening a lot! edit: i'm also pressing "s" when an image doesn't load. i guess i could just hit reload
The images not loading is an issue that was also causing loss count not to be updated from time to time. I was able to replicate the problem locally, fix is coming in now.
Thanks for the skip counter suggestion, I will consider adding it.

I have added the skip button per Mona Oskold request.
Alice Saki, the leaderboards have been temporarily switched to sort by # of wins, until the issue is resolved where 0 wins 0 losses characters were in top ranks. You are currently #5 if that makes you feel any better .
As it is, without any additional changes it creates some imbalance due to the nature of randomness: some people will have higher number of wins while others lower number of wins, even it's a good looking avatar. Once I add in the feature that will automatically balance everyone by the median of total votes, everyone will have a fair shot of being seen, and in that case # of wins would be a pretty accurate representation of ranking system.
I have also added an image lightbox on profile pages. If you click on an avatar it opens up a nice 1024x1024 image with a semi-transparent black background. So go check it out.
@AndromacheDarkstar, I am sorry, don't know what to tell you, but I don't mind if you tip me some ISK and in return you can look at my avatar and pretend it's Asphxia Noir. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Celebrities like Vile Rat, Seleene, Chribba and Mittani and most of CCP seem to fill out the list. Great list! Nova you have one of the best Intaki that I have seen! I know that the current system doesn't allow bloodline sorting (or even gender) but I would like to see how you stack compared to other Intaki since the list is so full of Achura!
Thanks, that's kind of you. Filtering by bloodline and race is pretty trivial to do. Just re-use the existing Top 100 page for bloodline and race. My only concern is displaying those characters all at the same time. There could be a few hundred Caldari characters and trying to load them all at once will take a 3-4 seconds to load even on a fast connection. I hate the fact that main page takes so long to load because it's pulling at 1300 characters (but who actually votes on all 1300 characters in one sitting?)
I'll try to add some kind of infinite scrolling first before attempting that feature. Someone has also asked for full list, sorted alphabetically, that one definitely needs pagination or infinite scrolling.
I always vote for you Eurydia Vespasian, unless you are head to head against Ariel Dawn, Luv Rocket, clitheroica, Antares Rai, Jaliaah, Riot Girl.
P.S. I am happy to say that the server hasn't crashed yet since yesterday. And there is only a minor discrepancy in wins / loss counts: 17305 wins vs 17319 losses. This is most likely due to people's internet connection. Each time you vote, it sends two separate requests to update: one for wins and one for losses. There could be so many reasons for one one request to not go through. Eventually i'll make it so that it sends only a single request, i.e. all or nothing vote. @Tanuki Kittybeta, The problem would arise when people start abusing it and start updating everyone's avatars, including those in Top14. One person could essentially reset everyone's rating to zero. Since there is no login requirement I can't do much to check who's avatar belongs to who, or who should have permissions to update avatar and who should not.
@MrEpeen Thank you, I did notice a big jump in new characters on the site. As for the skip button I added it per request of a few people who did not want to be forced to rate two awfully looking characters. One thing I can add to prevent skip button abuse is to put a time limit, e.g. 10 skips per hour. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

That's correct I have changed the leaderboard sorting by number of wins because people with no rating or only 1-2 wins were in the top ranks.
Thanks everyone for the feedback, here' s coming in the next update:
- The entire character list will no longer be loaded when you open the website. Instead only 2 characters will be displayed at a time. More requests will be made to the database but in return you'll have much faster initial loading times. I've heard reports where the site could take 13 seconds to load before you see anything. As more characters are added, it takes longer to load the page. There are now over 1500 characters in the database.
- Top leaderboards for each race, within that - for each bloodline.
- Keyboard shortcuts for voting left or right avatar. I was thinking A = left avatar, D = right avatar, or that plus left/right arrows.
- Skip button limit : 10 skips per hour.
- Timer that will automatically deleted lowest rated character each week or every 3 days. It's arbitrary, just have to be careful not to overdo it to the point where a year from now, half of the characters database will be deleted.
- Matching system will match similarly ranked people based on the win/loss ratio.
- Single server request per vote. The gap between wins and losses has slightly widened due to dropped wins or losses requests. From 48,000 votes, there are 49 more wins than losses. Both numbers should be equal.
- Add a small counter that displays a total number of characters on the website.
- Index database by character Id for faster querying. Add file indexing on GridFS for faster image loading.
- Convert existing images that still point to CCP servers to use local database instead. I have noticed significantly longer loading speed for images that still point to old URL. This means either: a) The CCP server are extremely busy right now or, b) The CCP has throttled bandwidth for image requests that come www.newedenfaces.com domain.

CHANGELOG JUN 18, 2013
You may now press A or Left Arrow and D or Right Arrow to vote for your favorite avatar!
Search bar displays total number of characters currently on the website.
Top 100: Overall, Caldari, Gallente, Minmatar, Amarr, +3 bloodlines per each race.
Bigger thumbnails, grayscale mouseover effect, large position font on Top 100 page.
Optimized search queries: smaller requests, faster page loading times.
All images are now stored on GridFS; now 100% independent from CCP servers.
Leaderboard / Top 100 is now sorted by Win/Loss Ratio once again.
Profile page now displays a more accurate Win:Loss ratio instead of a percentage. Formula is pretty straightforward: wins divided by losses.
Matching is now managed by the server, you will not see the same portrait until all 1500+ avatars have been voted for. Good news is that you don't have to do it all by yourself. Whenever you or someone else votes, skips or refreshes the page, it moves the "cursor" to the next avatar. This process repeats until it passes the total number of characters, after which it resets back to 0.
As some of you have suggested, now characters will be matched with similar win/loss ratio. To make it a little more random, matching won't be just between 2 adjacent avatars, but based on a radom number from 1 to 10. In other words, #1 avatar will be matched with a random avatar up to 10 ranks below.
Every 24 hours the lowest ranked character will be deleted from the database. ------- Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

There was a bug, that would crash the server when list of characters returned are less than 10 (towards the very end). Why do I need 10 characters from the database when there's only two characters that get displayed? To randomize and pair similarly ranked characters. I quickly fixed that problem, but then I noticed that after you vote for everyone you only reach up to a ~1000 people, instead of 1503. I am not sure how or why, so instead I temporarily rolled it back to simpler matching system: two adjacent pairs, e.g. #1 vs #2, #3 vs #4, #506 vs #507, etc... It's not that bad, just less predictable. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

It's disappointing to see people abusing the system when the site was meant to be used for fun. Next update will likely put a IP-address based limit on the skip button and avatar matching will go back to being random rather than rating-based.
Currently, as you may have noticed, someone can easily skip all 1500 characters, and keep voting for the same character over and over again, or write a script to do it. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Sorry, I have been busy last couple of days with real life matter, but here is an update on the status of New Eden Faces:
I have found a way to prevent voting for the same character multiple times via global session object. This session object will track character IDs of winners and losers, and if someone were to try and vote via a console by sending an XHR request they will get a nice Error 500: Already voted message. Since this is a global session object, opening New Eden Faces in incognito window or another browser, or another computer will not help the potential attacker, they will still get Error 500: Already voted. Session object is reset after all characters have been voted on, giving a fair chance for everyone to be seen.
Skip button. Initially there was no Skip button on newedenfaces.com. I added it as a feature request in the first few days that the site was up. Since then I have noticed that people would skip votes likes there's no tomorrow. In the end it just turned into abuse. You could have simply held 's' button and it would skip hundreds of characters in a matter of seconds. So with that, there will no longer be a skip functionality.
"But there are so many awfully looking characters, I don't want to be forced to vote if I don't like either of two avatars" you say. To partially remedy this problem I will create a Hall of Shame page and every day a character with the most losses will enter the hall of shame. Of course this won't go into effect right away. I'll give it a few days for wins/losses to be adjusted first.
@Skill Training Online: If anything, I should be thankful to those a**holes that were abusing the site. I know more now about general web security practices than I did a few days ago.
@S Byerley: a) Yes they (or perhaps one person) were abusing it. I was looking at the console that outputs all requests and log messages in real time right before I decided to shut it down. What was happening is characters' wins/losses counts were being updated without actually clicking on the image. It was quite easy, open REST API console, select a PUT request on www.newedenfaces.com/api/characters/:id and pass in character IDs of winner and a loser. You could send it as much as your heart desires. b) What do you mean by [the website] being stateless? The web is stateless.
@JAG Fox: Thank you, it won't be long before it's up and running again.
@Khira Kitamatsu: Forcing users to register won't solve the problem unfortunately. This is a problem of authorization rather than authentication. There was no restrictions on API that updates a vote count for winning and losing characters. Plus I think it's nice that a website doesn't force users to register or "Sign in with Facebook". Anyone can jump in and start voting right away. Regarding to your second question I have already done that using a session object. Alternatively I could use an IP address to see who has voted on which characters. But with session object I don't have to check who voted on what, I just check: has this character been voted on?; it doesn't matter who voted; if this character has already been voted, then no one can vote for same character twice.
@Danica Kaliinen: That level of cryptography is a little beyond my understanding but thanks for suggestion. I think this is a step in the right direction. Although I found a way to prevent voting for the same character more than once, I still don't know how to prevent voting for any characters other than two characters currently present on the screen. In other words current API design still allows to vote for arbitrary character without actually seeing it on the page (as long as no one has voted on that character yet). I don't see much potential abuse here, but nonetheless it's possible. The best case scenario for a potential attacker is that he/she may vote one time for someone from a console, but will still have to wait until all 1500+ people have been voted on before doing this again.
@Eurydia Vespasian: I know, there is really nothing to gain from jacking up the votes on an avatar contest site. It's not even a major contest website, let alone popular among EVE players. But on a bright side I am glad it happened sooner than later.
@Ariel Dawn: You must be referring to that skank (Mr.Epeen's words) that had 400 votes at the end, which 4 times more votes than the next highest rated avatar. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Disclaimer: The next few days will be the beta-testing stage. Do not be upset if I reset stats now and then as I find new bugs.
In the meantime, please do try and break the website so I could fix the problems sooner than later. If you find something suspicious, like wins or losses count is not being updated properly, let me know. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

I will temporarily fix it by so that 2 avatars that have been voted on, must be present, instead of at least one. In the meantime I will figure out what's causing these random hicups. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

I was planning to remove that tooltip for some time now. Funny, but I do exactly the same thing when I am not sure who to vote for, and always vote for the avatar with higher wins count. I am quite impressed with activity so far: 50,000 votes when New Eden Faces was launched, 67,000 votes after the first reset, and now we are up to 118,000 since the reset last week. All in all 235,000 votes since launch!
One thing I noticed is there are a lot of great characters with high number of wins. Everyone in top 100 has 82+ wins, and #1 as of right now has 94 wins. That's 12 point difference over 100 characters. And right now leaderboard has a few characters with the same # of wins, which makes Leaderboard position irrelevant because they are displayed in something like "first come first serve" basis.
I might take Ariel Dawn's advice and introduce a winning percentage sorting after a certain number of wins. That shouldn't mess anything up, other than change ordering of some characters in top 100. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

The server was down again just now, but it's not entirely my fault. There was a problem connecting to the database; something was wrong on their end (MongoLab).
I wish the server could just restart itself when it crashes, since it does not, I have to do error validation on every single thing to avoid server crashing all together. This was the first time the app crashed due to database connection error.

Update (June 27, 2013)
Improved security: Each vote request will require a nonce - randomly generated hash string, which will then be matched with the server for validity. This is in addition to existing checking for voted characters and IP addresses. (Thanks @Danica Kaliinen)
Hall of Shame: The top 25 worst characters will go here. I advise not to look, some characters will leave an image so awful in your head, that you won't be able to erase it.
Stability: Added more error handlers to prevent a potential server crash. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Currently Top 100 and Leaderboard views are sorted by the total number of wins. I've tried other methods, but they all seemed too volatile, i.e. leaderboard would change too frequently to be of any use.

UPDATE: Exceeded disk quota.
Orion Pax wrote:It would be nice if you could categorize it into both men and women. Having an all time favorites gets boring over time, so in addition to that, it would be awesome to have a more dynamically updating system similar to 500px.com (it's a photo sharing site) where we could see new faces everyday based on short term popularity trends. Unfortunately I have no idea how 500px.com's popularity algorithm works so you'll probably have to create your own.
While I could manually separate male and female avatars, in the long term it's not going to work out. I could also add a gender radio button when adding a character, but it relies solely on the truthfulness of people. Nothing will prevent you from adding a male avatar and selecting a female checkbox. To determine character's gender with 100% accuracy, I'll need everyone's full API which is not practical - because who wants to give out their API keys just for some avatar contest website! I like that "trending" popularity idea, but it will not work as well as on 500px, reddit, stackexchange. Those websites have a constant flow of new posts/images that are time-sensitive. You don't necessarily care about popular stuff from last year. You care about popular images or posts that are up-to-date. On New Eden Faces there is a fixed number of total characters and I just don't see a good way to translate "trending" algorithm to newedenfaces.com project. What I could do is reset leaderboard every week/biweekly to keep it somewhat changing. Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Sorry guys I've been busy with some real life stuff and I was not able to fix the errors that caused the crash who knows when. I just found out why I was hitting the "Exceeded disk quota". My log file was accidentally printing all 2500 characters into a text file on each request.
After bringing the server back for 5 minutes, the brand new log file was already at 11 megabytes. It's a lot of megabytes for a website that is less than 1 mb in total.
I am currently working on the improvements I have mentioned earlier. In addition I have considered the gender-separated voting and think that's a good idea. For that I am going to need a few trusted volunteers who can set a gender to existing characters.
For future character adds I am considering whether there should be an approval process signed off by me once a day, or have a report button next to character's name, in the case when opposite gender is encountered . Creator of New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Hello everyone,
I know I haven't been posting in this thread for quite some time but that doesn't mean I stopped working on New Eden Faces project. If you haven't checked it out yet, a few days ago I did a partial UI overhaul to keep things fresh.
There is a "bug" in the system right now where characters are being matched to the same one or two people per each round. You probably have noticed that already. It has already been fixed but because I also did a very significant refactoring change to the entire codebase I am going to hold off from pushing the changes to the live website for now, until more testing is done.
Now I would like your hear your opinion on where should the next priority be for New Eden Faces. I have a few things that I would like to implement:
- Character "VS mode" where you can pit a character against another one. The difference between current voting system is you get to choose which character goes against another character. Only 1 fight per character can be active at any time. After 8 hours, one with the most votes is the winner.
- Stats page that shows total number of males, females, how many characters per each race, bloodline. Display a live history of all votes (who won, who lost). Because right now it's all transparent, you don't know who won against who, or when did that happen... Possibly some other other useful statistics that could be extracted from database. And of course pretty graphs will be part of the stats page!
- Scheduler to remove lowest ranking character each day. Another scheduler to reset all stats every 200 or 300 rounds?
- Character traits such as Attractive, Intelligent, Angry, Calm. User can select over a hundred different attributes from a drop down list. Can only cast one trait per character. Profile page keeps track of which traits have been casted for the character, as well as the # of times the same trait has been casted. For example Attractive (3), Intelligent (2), Admirable.
- Performance optimizations = make site more responsive, by using caching, less number of requests, minifying JS and CSS files.
And as always, if you have found a bug let me know so I could try to fix it. If you just keep quiet about it or whine "fix your broken ****" without explaining what the problem is (and yes that happened), I cannot fix it. I am a full-time student, with a part-time job and working on so many other projects at any given time, I simply do not have time to look for every possible bug or loophole in the website.
Thanks,

I wish I could write a script that will go through all forums and grab thousands of characters automatically, but unfortunately if I do that I will not be able to set character's gender since you need an EVE API key for that sort of information. So in the worst case scenario thousands for characters will have an undefined gender and won't be matched properly until people click on "Wrong Gender" button and then I re-assign gender manually myself. I could do that if others don't mind seeing incorrect gender matching for a short period of time.

So far I haven't noticed any irregularities other than people's bad taste in good-looking avatars. Ariel Dawn (http://www.newedenfaces.com/characters/916857044) is not even in Top 100. And what happened to Female Sebeistor? They used to dominate the leaderboard. My avatar has never been in Top 10 before, so I assume this is due to the other 2 "fixed" avatars I am constantly being matched against which are most-likely significantly worse than Nova Kierra. Will release a fix for a proper character randomization shortly.

I think you might want to take some kind of look at the ranking algorithm for the males vs female portraits. Seems the difference between individual female portraits is more pronounced and so they get higher win to loss ratios. But where you never put a male portrait against a female portrait you're ending up with male portraits very rarely getting into the overall ranking. Yeah, this is a pretty big problem. Right now it just looks like the site is being used so that people can upvote their high-sec dolls. There are NO male characters in the top 100, which is pretty ridiculous.
I am aware of it. As far as correctness goes, there is nothing wrong with it. Top female character and top male characters have the same total number of votes (# of wins + # of losses). Male votes tend to be more distributed between wins and losses. Where female votes are more pronounced with higher wins, fewer losses.

too funny. I can see how what I said could be taken that way looking at it again though lol
That did sound like a snarky comment, implying her avatar wasn't ever going to be in Top 100 even after reset. .
The website has been stable for the most part lately. Occasionally it crashes and doesn't come back up automatically. I am still working on making it more stable, but sometimes it feels like nothing I do seems to fix it. So it could be the Openshift hosting provider at fault here.
Celeste Taylor wrote:Ila Dace wrote:The other Ila was number 1 for about a week in a previous iteration. Now 43%, that doesn't seem right. I agree. The busiest I have been in NEF was back during that "previous matches" era when she was the top Ni-Kunni. Great looking character. I feel as though that was my favorite list, and I think Celeste tended to drift just around that top14 cut off through most of it. I still stand by my "locked opponents" theory, since a few of my favorite characters (mine and other peoples) have not made it to the top 100. There are also some matches like Ugly Douchebag and Rok Tar who are locked together, ensuring that they both stay around 50% despite both being hideous. I usually hate bagging on other avatars, but it is clear both were designed to be very ugly. I think we have seen some major ethnic leanings with each iteration. I remember a time when CCP Soundwave, Private Panikan, Kin Ha, Sajuuk Brutor, Seam Daigon, Militant Barbie and a bunch of other darker avatars (back when I voted a bunch) filled the top 14. I think there was also a major Sebiestor and Achura bias at one point. Looks a bit Euro for the top 14 at the moment. Not quite sure what to make of this, but it is something I noticed. Oh, and yes December is my newest character and considering the resemblance despite being an Intaki decided to use the Taylor (half sister?) name. I think my Civire, Luna (who doesn't get much use) might look a bit more like Celeste and is the second of the Taylor half sisters. I love how the character generator does not restrict your appearance to your bloodline.
I am surprised that December Taylor hadn't been added earlier. Nice avatar! I still have a full-body customization available from that time when CCP gave us all a free re-sculpting, so I might re-do Nova and go for a different look .
Lots of reason for ethnic leanings. Could be new visitors, but I think the biggest factor is the number of avatars has dramatically increased. Back in June there were only about a 1000. A lot of characters have changed their appearances as well. Or perhaps because there were so many iterations and resets some people don't want to vote for the same avatars they used to vote anymore.
Another big possible reason is gender matching. That might explain the female gender bias in Top 100. Maybe people vote differently female vs female than male vs male? New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

I underestimated the male to female character ratio by a long shot. Had I set all newly added characters as male, there would be much less gender mismatch. I have already converted a few thousand characters to their proper gender manually, and people are still reporting gender mismatches. Once all characters are assigned their correct gender I wll do a proper score reset.
Just pushed an update that will hopefully make things a little faster. Previously it was pulling all 9000+ characters when you load the page so you could start typing character's name in the search box and it would autocomplete the name. Plus added a few other javascript optimizations.
Lipbite, as far as avatar quality goes, I suppose I can't make everyone happy. Too few characters (even if they are all good looking) makes the website uninteresting after a while, not to mention easy to abuse. Too many characters results in: a few good characters and the rest are just average or just plain awful. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

All stats have been reset. Additionally, many characters have been removed in the order of lowest win-loss ratio. Male to female ratio is close to 1:1 now, so you won't end up with a scenario where you have nothing but male character votes for the next 1000 votes because all female characters have already been voted on. Arduemont here has 18 wins and 6 losses, which should place him above 95th on the top male 100, but he's not showing up there. Also, the page times out (with 'Proxy Error') when I try to load any race specific (as opposed to bloodline specific) male leaderboard.
Thanks for the bug report. I was not aware about that Proxy Error. It works fine locally, so I can only assume it's on the hosting's side. As a workaround I have switched to hash URLs, which is the default routing mechanism in Backbone.js, e.g. http://www.newedenfaces.com/#stats
As for your top 100 placement, you weren't in it because there are too many other characters with the same # of wins. The cut off point is a hundred characters. Sorting by winning percentage is calculated on the fly after 100 characters sorted by wins are retrieved. If MongoDB database could sort by function expressions such as the one for calculating the winning percentage, this wouldn't be an issue. It only allows to sort by actual fields: losses, wins, name in ascending or descending order.
Until I come up with a better solution I have increased a cut off point to 150 characters, sort them by winning percentage and then return top 100 from those. Same goes for leaderboard, the cut off point is now 18 characters, sort by winning percentage, return top 12. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

There are a few others like Riot Girl, Eternal Sophia and Private Panacan who seem to travel up and down with us. Part of the issue is that people like us don't vote against avatars just to keep them from the top. So over the last week there are a bunch of great looking avatars above us (who I don't have the heart to vote against) who have until yesterday had perfect scores. As of I believe yesterday I have started to see some votes against the top circle though, so I believe either a bitter voter just noticed that the counter was reset or someone wants to pull ahead from all those near perfect scores or fell off that top ranks due to normal voting. For the most part though I think that most of us who are not on the top 100 but have not voted against the top over the past week are part of the nice people group and eventually will make it to the ranks again. I do agree that the top 100 is starting to shape well though since most of the avatars that I vote for are there, despite a number of absent ones due to negative voting.
It is weird how fast the males are dropping though. I still believe it has to do with the fact that it is harder to agree with what makes a good looking male avatar. For example I will occasionally vote for one with a facial tattoo (rarely do this for female avatars) but it does look like the community dislikes facial tattoosl, so in effect voting for them will lower the overall top scores for male avatars. It is also easier for me to choose an amazing or hideous female avatar, while often I am at a loss when deciding which male looks better.
edit: I love the statistics page. I would think that the "Leading Race" should be leading bloodline, especially if this is an easy change or addition. The three bloodlines for each race have so little (physically) in common and the groupings feel rather arbitrary for the site. It is also funny to see the most recently added list since most of them are terrifying with a few great looking ones. Why do people add avatars that don't have a associated image to them?
edit: of course it wouldn't be a big stretch to think that someone actually doesn't like our avatars and prefer girls with huge assets or radical hairstyles and piecing. It just seems weird that there are some avatars who are somewhat similar in qualities who do not have many negative votes which makes it feel a bit more personal.
It's funny you mention Eternal Sophia. That used to be my character in 2009 until I sold her about 6 months later. That was before the 3D character creator, so I am not responsible for her current look.
I can add leading bloodline to statistics page as well, it's not too much work. Anything else you would like to see on the stats page?
There is a small update incoming shortly that will make overall website a little more stable.

Are you in a wormhole space? But I will admit, the previous Eurydia was better. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Sorry for the brief downtime. I had some issues with the new feature that displays how many users are online on the website. This update mostly contains code refactoring, better error handling, new loading indicator, new notifications alerts and new statistics info per Celestia's request.
@Eurydia Vespasian: Come by Jita 4-4 when you get a chance. I always hang out there. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

There was a short outage today due to the first time bug. It has been fixed and hopefully won't happen again.
@Angelica Dreamstar: Your character is pretty. But i think she will look even better without piercings, tattoo (and maybe freckles). The pose, background and light is great otherwise. PM Ariel Dawn, you might get some helpful tips on re-styling your character. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Raine Marelwe wrote:I don't know if you're taking suggestions/requests, but I would come back to the site a lot more often if we could see who a given character has 'beaten' and - more importantly - been 'beaten' by in individual pairings.
I find myself losing interest in the site because I look at some of the high performers and, even attempting to compensate for obvious bias, cannot reconcile that they should outperform my (or many other) characters.
Were one able to peruse match results, evidence of either A; honest superiority in pairings received, or B; obvious vote fixing, would become apparent. I'd be very interested in either or both, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.
This also seems like it would have beneficial effects as far as data collection for your project is concerned: What if 'certain people' are only being paired against uggos, or the same folks over and over? Such a feature would reveal this tendency. Alternatively, it would provide closure for bitter people like myself - who are unable to cope with their lousy score - when we realize we're losing to Large Collidable Object instead of, you know, attractive avatars.

Thank you for your feedback. I am listening to people's feedback and feature requests. Displaying a history of voting is something I have already planned to add, but doing so requires a significant change in the underlying model schema.
At the moment I am working on adding a "Browse" page where you could browse all 6000+ avatars using an infinite scroll.
And lastly, vote fixing doesn't happen, not anymore. It's unlikely from 3000 characters of the same gender you will be matched with the same character twice in a row. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

I need some feedback for this page: http://www.newedenfaces.com/#browse . It will go through all characters, 30 at a time, if you have enough patience to click the button. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

If you clicked the button at least 7 times, or after 210 characters, it will clear itself and start over with just the 30 new characters.
Edit: If people are experiencing noticeable lag I could reduce that number to ~120-150 characters. I have tested it here on my laptop and my iPhone, no issues so far. New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |

Sarah Schneider wrote:Pretty awesome site, thanks for putting the effort of making this!
I'd however point out that the pure random occurrences on the pairings a bit weird, after "pushing the buttons" for a few hundred times, I found that one of the random nature of the pairings is imho, a concern. Even when you have a really high traffic on that site, it's virtually impossible to reach a "proper" 'top X' faces/avatars using this algorithm.
When I first looked at the top 12 for instance, I find it weird (no offense to the avatar creators though) that some of the best avatars around like Ariel Dawn, Alice Saki, Fazmarai weren't even there. A lot of those avatars that has beaten them in terms of votes count honestly made no sense to me.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though, but I believe that matching people with high ratings with bad avatars would surmount to nothing. A moderately good avatar might have more votes than some really good ones just because they occur more often and might have been paired with mostly oogly avatars.
You bring up good points about random matching shortcomins, but after trying a few different approaches, random works better and is more reliable, also there are less bugs with it. Randomized approach seems to provide the least-interference type of voting. And I think it has worked ok so far.
Sarah Schneider wrote: Another big issue with pure random matching is that the bigger the list are, the more the top ladder becomes a lucky ladder instead of who's the best of them all. You may also want to address the rank evaluation algorithm to solve this issue, because I honestly don't believe that anyone would ever vote/click 3k times on the site so that everyone's covered.
The very first revision of New Eden Faces would send you 1000k+ characters to your browser and let you vote for characters independent of other users. As you can imagine that spiralled out of control on the first day. Some time later the server code would maintain the list of voted characters to prevent voting for the same character multiple times. As of October 2013 it is now handled on the database layer. It is not possible to vote for the same character more than any other character per round. Voting rounds are global. If you voted for Makalu Zarya just now, everyone else will have to wait until this round is over before someone sees Makalu Zarya again. As a voter I wish i could vote and see every character pair, but with that you cannot have balanced votes.
Sarah Schneider wrote: I also don't think there won't be much of an issue when 'good' avatars are paired only with good ones, if someone likes A better than B, then so be it, if both are equally good, someone might pick B over A for the next time. You can even put some entropy counter mechanics to the random pairing to prevent a good avatar from getting a losing streak and for multiple occurrences of the same avatar which resulting in more votes/downvotes for that particular avatar.
This should allow the top 12 to actually be a top 12 'best faces' rather than just the luckiest 12.
I will add the winning and losing streak counts to the character profile page, but again as I explained above it's best to leave randomized voting as is. If I am to change it again I will surely screw it up and introduce more bugs with this new slightly more intelligent match pairing. There are lots of easy features I could implement first, and if I have time in the future I will consider on improving match pairing and voting algorithms.
Sarah Schneider wrote: Maybe Nova should reserve the top spots for those characters and exclude them from the voting, but maybe it is only your opinion that they belong in the top 12 and not everybody's.
I am planning to add a page with handpicked avatars and maybe update it once a month or until I see better avatars.
Sarah Schneider wrote: One improvement would be to remove the character names on the voting pairs as I think some voters might be biased by name and/or reputation.
Coming in the next update, but as a side-effect you should know you won't have a way to open character profile page. If it's not a big deal then I don't mind removing names when voting. (Speaking of bias, back in the day it would actually show you a winning percentage with a nice progress bar right next to character names) New Eden Faces -> www.newedenfaces.com |
